“They are not free who drag their chains after them.” -French Proverb
I believe this quote is talking about criminals, as in, prisoners and jail mates. I agree with this quote because prisoners and jail mates do not have freedom. However, that is their own fault since they broke the law and lost the right to their freedom. This quote to me is almost just a statement rather than an argument. I could see how some people would find it an argument because criminals, in the United States, still do have freedom. They get free food, water, and rent. Along side of the fact that police and guardsmen have policies they have to follow with physical contact between the criminals.
“Comments like “He isn’t himself” or “That is so unlike her” indicate how predictable people are expected to be.” -Unknown
This quote really hit me hard to the point where I just stopped and said “wow”. I thought of society right away and how eyeopening and true this quote really is. So many times have I heard those words out of people’s mouths in public and really haven’t put too much thought into it. Honestly, I have been really mentally struggling with old friends of mine being very mean to me and my sorority sisters have told me numerous amounts of times that I just haven’t been myself lately. Therefore, this quote hits home to me after having one of the worst weeks of my life. This quote is also the reason why I love this class so much because I can just express all of my feelings without worrying what anyone thinks of me.
“Each roll of the die… is totally unrelated to events that were before it… Yet our brains simply refuse to accept this fact. This is randomness: insisting that there is order where there is only chaos.” -Charles Seife
This quote made my head spin at how much it relates to my life. I am a strong believer in “Everything happens for a reason” so I am not sure if I agree or disagree with this quote. I believe that now I need to open my mind up to knowing that random is possible. Yet, I still want to believe it was all part of God’s plan. This quote really has my emotions mixed up since it is stating a fact. Yet, just like the quote says, I do not want to accept the fact. All in all, this quote taught me a lesson that I’ve never really thought about before and that is the main reason to why I chose it as one of my three quotes of the week.
I somewhat agree with this quote if the religious aspect does not fall into place. I believe God created all things to be possible through man. Whether that is man or woman. Then again, we are the reason for new inventions and changes to the world that are controlled. We are not the reason for changes to the world such as weather or what happens to populations of not all wildlife, but just some. What this means is that because man has the power to create most, man is the measure to most things. To me personally, the measure of all things is the reason for something to happen.
“What gives us surer knowledge than our senses? With what else can we better distinguish the true from the false?” -Lucretius
This quote really caught be off guard. I am still kinda in shock because of how much it relates to me. Even though these are two questions being asked, they are true. The questions being asked are basically ones that only have an answer of nothing. Our senses are how we live life on a daily basis. If someone doesn’t like something, then their senses will tell them. This also goes with all of the feelings anyone has such as being happy, mad, sad, excited, and etc. The final thing I will say about this quote is that without our senses we would not know how to live life. We would have no fear, love, and emotion at all. I am forever thankful for my senses.
“Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.” -Paul Klee
This quote is very hard to agree with but at the same time it is very hard not to agree with. In some aspects, I believe art does make the visible because things that might not actually happen can be shown to happen through art. On the other hand, if someone is drawing a picture of an event that happened, such as the 9/11 terrorist attack, then that is art reproducing the visible. Either way art saves memories, thoughts, and imagination and brings them all to life in so many different ways. When most people think about art they think about a pencil and paper but art is so much more than that. Art is the buildings we drive by everyday or the sculptures around cities. Art is such a broad topic that is easily looked over by a visual of just a pencil and paper.
“Study nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” -Frank Lloyd Wright
I agree with this quote a lot because I am a huge fan of nature. When I am sad I go for nature walks and when I need motivation to run I go on runs through nature. I grew up with a lake house on Paw Paw Lake, Michigan and the neighborhood is called Natures Cove. I believe that because I have always been surrounded with nature that is has shaped the way I live and love life. Nature has never failed me because their has never been a time in my life where I was surrounded by nature and upset. No matter what my mood is nature will always amaze me and put a smile on my face.
I also strongly believe in this quote. I am a huge believer in God myself. When I went away to basic combat training with the military I was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. If you know anything about Oklahoma then you know how the entire state is made up of plains and hills of grass. Even though it is considered a boring and dull state I found it to be one of the prettiest and most relaxing states. When I would go to the range to shoot I often found myself staring in the distance and feeling to closest to God. I could see the beauty he has created and it put me in awe everyday.
“Many believe they need to do nothing to help in the healing process, that it will take place magically.” -Unknown
This quote made me deeply think. When I am healing after a heart break the best thing for me to do is be with people who support me the most and talk me through all of the issues. When I am healing from a bad day then I believe this quote is true in the sense of doing nothing. I usually go for nature walks by myself and look at the beautiful nature. This, I consider doing nothing about since nature walks are an everyday thing for me. When my friends are in the healing process I always feel the need to do something in order to help them out because I am an extremely caring person. All in all, I believe it is up to each person of how they need and want to heal. Some people need a lot of support and others do not need any.
“Love: any form of relationship between human beings when used in conjunction with the phrase “falling in love” or “being in love.” -Morton M. Hunt
For this quote I had to stop and read it over a few times. I could not get over the part where Hunt says “any form of relationship between human beings” because I love my dog Teddy. I believe that this quote should say “any form of relationship between any living organism.” I am an animal person and I tend to love and care for animals more than humans, therefore, I disagree with this quote. Love is a universal word and just because you are not human does not mean you can not love something or someone. My dog, for instance, taught me more about unconditional love than any human could ever teach me. He has always been by my side even when I get mad at him. He has always been there to kiss my face so I wake up and have a good day. He has always been my shoulder to cry on when I am in need of love the most. All in all, I believe this quote needs to be revised.
“Couples work themselves into hypnotic states daily by repeating to each other over and over again that they love each other… They also say they love a certain brand of toothpaste.” -Charles Willeford
I could not agree more with this quote. However, I do not believe that it is just couples who work themselves into hypnotic states. I believe that anyone is capable of doing it because I do it all the time. The more I think about a person and talk about a person the more I either like them or dislike them based on how I think and what I say. For instance, I was in a serious relationship with someone and when it was over I knew I had to move on and fast so I did not hit the depressed stage. This is when I started forcing myself into liking a guy who was really into me at the moment even though I was not all that interested in him. This then lead to me liking him a lot more than I should and not being able to get over him. Therefore, this quote is kinda like stating a curse that we humans put upon ourselves.
“some cupid kills with arrows, some with traps.” -William Shakespeare
I personally think that this quote could have a few possible meaning behind it. However, how I understand it was that some people are here for love, and others to be players and use people. I agree with this quote as well. I personally have come across guys who truly want to be with me and make me happy. I’ve also come across some guys who play me and end up just using me in the end which breaks my heart. In the end, I learn from my mistakes. I have also found out that the worse the guy treats me, the less their mom has taught them about treating ladies. This is really sad to me but I am thankful I have discovered this since I want my own kids one day. I strive for them to know how to properly treat people with respect and love no matter what. As my mom always says, “kill them with kindness.”
“We live very close together. So our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least do them no harm.” -The Dalai Lama
I very much agree with this quote. This quote to me is saying to always at least try and be a good person. If you can not or do not want to help someone then the least you can do is not hurt them. This quote can pertain to something so small as two siblings in an argument or something as big as world peace. I come from a very religious family where this quote was said very often. Especially when me and my little brother would fight over something so stupid as who cheated in a basketball game out in the front yard. However, now that I am older, this quote hits home with world peace. I hate seeing so many innocent people around the world suffer and die in horrible and tragic ways. The least someone could do is stop and mind their own business.
“All religions are the therapies for the sorrows and disorders of the soul.” -Carl Jung
I agree and disagree with this quote. First, I agree because when I am sad or depressed I turn to God to give me strength to make it through the day. When I go to church I aways leave feeling refreshed and reborn as if God himself is walking along side of me telling me that I can do whatever I put my mind to. Therefore, I guess I can say that my religion is my therapy for my sorrows and disorders. On the other hand, I do not agree with this quote because I believe religion means more than just a type of therapy. Religion defines a person. Religion is the way someone lives their life. Finally, religion make someone who they are.
“From listening comes wisdom and from speaking, repentance.” -Jewish Proverb
This quote stood out to me because I’ve heard Dr. Carme tell my fellow classmates it. I agree with this quote because I learn from sitting in class listening but my professors do not learn by teaching each of their classes the same material. This also goes along with when I tell a story. I got the story’s wisdom by listening to someone tell me it. Then, I pass the wisdom of the story down to others by repeating the story I listened to, to them. Finally, this goes along with the belief that the most quiet people make the best listeners and have the most wisdom. Think about it, if all you do is observe and take in knowledge you will just become smarter and smarter and have all of that wisdom built up. These people, I believe, make the best teachers.
“A real obstacle to happiness is to expect too much happiness.” -Fontenelle
In my opinion, this quote speaks to the majority of the world. Society today, believes that to be happy that you must live a perfect life and always have a smile on your face. This is the complete opposite of true. To be happy is different for everyone. Nobody is perfect. How I know that I am happy is when I smile at least once a day. I am known for my smile with most of my friends, therefore, I know that if I can not find a way to smile then something must be wrong with me. Expecting too much happiness is like expecting your life to fall right into place without having to move any mountains. That is just simply not reality.
“Behind every cloud is another cloud.” -Judy Garland
I took this quote in a sense of “there’s more fish in the sea”. I agree with this quote since I have realized it myself. While growing up I experienced break up after break up with heartbreaks from stupid guys. The biggest problem most people have is seeing the future. This makes a break up seem like the end of the world when really it’s just a great learning experience and you will laugh about it down the road. I struggle with this a lot and especially now since I just faced a recent break up. It is hard for me to move on since I have invested so much of my life into one person already. I have been having troubles seeing my future that hopefully will bring lots of happiness. This quote was also a little motivating to me, in a sense of telling me to just keep going because there’s always plenty more in front of me.
“Success is getting what you want; happiness is wanting what you get.” -Anonymous
I can not explain how my heart felt while reading this quote. It was as if all my questions for the past two years have been answered. For example, I only want what I can not have. This becomes a problem because once I win what I wanted, I usually end up finding out it is not want I expected. In other words, it is not what I want. Therefore, I strongly support this quote and believe everyone should have it read to them at least once in their life. Most adults who I grew up around think that everything revolves around money. This makes me very sad because money is the reason my family has fallen apart in love and religion. My family is very successful and thought that money and success is the key to happiness. However, once they first became successful is when my parents got a divorce and everything went down hill from their because they did not want what they got out of being successful.
“In a place of peace and love music would be the universal language.” -Henry David Thoreau
Let me just start my blog off with saying that music helps me get through the hardest of times. However, I could agree and disagree with this quote. This is because of the different styles of music. I personally listen to upbeat love songs of country music, therefore, this quote would be true to me. The country songs I listen to have a good meaning that spread love. When I am mad at myself or someone I listen to country because it soothes my soul and shines some light on my problems. In contrast, I disagree with this quote when it comes to the new version of rap music with this century. This is because rap usually uses wording that is not appropriate or there’s sayings along the lines of calling people, but girls especially, hateful words. This however, would not be the universal language of a place full of peace and love.
“Our sweetest songs are those that tell the saddest thoughts” -Percy Bysshe Shelley
This quote really stood out to me because I strongly agree with it. I also tend to listen to sad songs when I am sad to open up my outlook on a situation. When I got my heart broken for the first time, it was sad country love songs that got me through the hardest moments. This is because sad songs make you realize that you are not the only one who has gone through the type of pain you are feeling. It really helps me knowing that I am not alone. I also am the type of person who tends to not want to take anyones advise because I am very stubborn. If I get hooked on a song I want to listen to it all the time and know the deeper meaning of it. I also have noticed that in sad country love songs the artist is not bashing on the ex who broke their heart, but instead, they are talking about the old memories and good times that they will miss.
“Through songs we find out things about ourselves. We say, “Oh yeah. I’ve felt that way.” -Lois Walder
This quote relates to me so closely that I actually laughed reading it. The moment I read this quote I needed to read it again because I could hear myself throughout the years saying it over and over and over again. Country songs have shaped my life in many ways. I have two great examples and the first one is the song “American Soldier” by Toby Keith. When this song first came out I just loved listening to it because of the beat. I was also a lot younger then. When I was in Basic Combat Training with the military, my drill sergeants played this song for us at graduation. I cried, I listened to every word and shook my head because they all related to me. At that very moment, I realized the words “freedom isn’t free” would be the truest words I will ever hear. My other great example is the song “Learned It From the Radio” by Thomas Rhett. This song talks about learning how to grow up from the music heard on the radio. This related to me so well because most songs I listen to are for a reason. That reason is that they relate to me so they have a deeper meaning to me than just a few words being sung to a beat in the background.
What is Autism? Autism is a development disorder that make social interactions and communication very difficult and restricted. “Loneliness, lack of friends, few social activities, and little support are among the most common problems that people with autism and their families face” (“Effects of Autism on the Individual and their Family,” n.d.). This quote really stood out to me by catching my emotions. There are some families that can cope well with the additional challenges added to their lives, but unfortunately that is not the case for most of them. Autism would be particularly hard for me to deal with since I feel like I would be depressed watching a family member or friend have to struggle through life not understanding why it is so hard to make friends.
In an interview with a parent, Jamie Feldmeier, she expresses her concerns with what others think of autistic children. She said, “I feel that people need to understand that autism is only part of my son. It isn’t who he is. I would like people to stop and think before they pass judgement on a child or his/her parents when a child is having a meltdown or acting out of control. Don’t make the assumption that is a bad child or those are bad parents. Since people with autism look just like everyone else people decide they are and don’t stop and think that there may be something more to the story. I also want schools, educators and government officials to understand that although they have the degree, I know my child better than they do and I know what I am talking about when determining my child’s needs and what programs will or won’t work for him” (J. Feldmeier, personal communication, March 25, 2017). Jamie has a son named Ben, who is eight years old. She explained how they knew Ben had autism pretty early on. By the time he was one years old, he had begun the typical “hand flapping” when he became excited. Jamie expressed how it was very easy to see that there was something different about Ben, because he had a typically developing twin sister. As parents, they could see there were differences between Ben and Abbey. She also went into detail about how things changed once Ben was diagnosed. They immediately put him into early intervention and he began receiving speech therapy, occupational therapy and developmental therapy. When the neuropsychologist recommended Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, they were forced to change their insurance policy so that they could get coverage for Ben to receive ABA therapy. She explained how there was a strain on her marriage over the actual diagnosis as well as the treatments and outcomes. Their entire family’s schedule had to be revolved around Ben’s therapy sessions which was hard on everyone. This quote made me realize how hard it must be for parents to have to watch their children get made fun of, talked about, or laughed at. I am very angry at the fact that people like to judge others before knowing what they are facing and going through. This quote hit home for me since my little brother gets bullied for having mental disabilities. His name is Blake, Blake is fourteen now and just the other day he was bullied by his basketball team for being fat. Little does any of his teammates know that Blake can not help his weight, the medicine he takes makes him put on the extra pounds. I believe that during the early childhood stages of school, kids should be taught about all the common disabilities in order to understand them. Maybe that could be our only hope of preventing bullying from going on. There are many different ways to find out more information on autism. The Autism Society is one way to learn more about the disability, which was founded in 1965 by Dr. Bernard Rimland, Dr. Ruth Sullivan, and many other parents of children with autism. Their goal is to improve the lives of all affected by autism.
“A sensory diet provides the necessary combination of sensory input to ‘feed or nourish’ a child’s nervous system. When a child’s nervous system feels properly organized it is better able to achieve optimum attention to tasks and performances of activities” (Davis & Dubie, n.d). I found this quote to be very informative since I have no idea Autistic kids had to watch everything they ate. There are different categories to the sensory diet. The first is visual. Using a lamp instead of overhead fluorescent lighting, putting pictures on containers for students with poor visual memory, and keeping the amount of visual information on a worksheet to a minimum are just a few examples of visual ideas. Minimizing verbal directions and using ear plugs or head phones are two examples associated with auditory ideas. Next is tactile ideas which includes things such as providing easy access to small hand fidgets, allowing students to sit in a bean bag chair, and experimenting with different types of clothing. Another part of the sensory diet includes tastes and smell ideas which include things such as rewarding students with food or cooking time, using foods they already like, using minimal amounts of perfume or cologne and having a scented candle, lotion, marker, etc. available to smell to calm student. This also relates to my brother because his body processes sugar at a way higher rate. This means he can not have too much sugar or he will have an episode and freak out without being able to control himself.
“If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are gone, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing.” -Carson McCullers
This quote really hit me mentally since I have been struggling with this for a while now. When I joined the military, my parents said you can only do the National Guard so you can still go to college. Now looking back, I wish I was able to go active duty for at least four years. I struggle each and everyday watching my friends, who are over seas, fight the battle I signed up for. I feel as if I am not doing enough for this country by staying home and going to college. I agree with this quote and that is why I strive to make a difference in this world. I want to be the person that everyone looks back at and says “she changed my life in a positive way”. I am not the greatest writer or I probably would have already started trying to write books but I know I naturally succeed with hands on projects. I truly believe I was put on this planet for some good reason, now I need to go find out what that reason is.
“Passion makes the world go round. Love just makes it a safer place.” -Ice-T
This quote made me look at my job a little differently. This quote is true because without my passion for this country, I would not try as hard to be the best soldier as I can be. However, without the love me and my battle buddies share, our job would be a lot more dangerous. As crazy as it sounds, I feel the safest when I’m with my battle buddies since I know they will always have my back and I will always have their’s as well. This to me, is what unconditional love means. Overall, if someone does not have passion for what they do they will not do the best they can. If someone loses love, their world will not stop turning.
“A woman is sitting in her old, shuttered house. She knows that she is alone in the whole world; every other thing is dead. The doorbell rings.” -A short tale of horror attributed to Thomas Bailey Aldrich
I have no words, as if I am almost in shock. This quote seems like a quote of hope, but I just feel depressed. I feel this way because I have been in that woman’s position as if I felt so alone with no one to turn to. Honestly, this is how I have been feeling today. I have a lot of support and love in my life but that does not help my feeling of being so empty inside. A part of me has been taken away when I lost my best friend and I know that piece of my heart will never be full again. This just describes the beginning of the quote though. My friends and mom always tell me that good things will come along once I learn patience. The woman in this quote sat patiently waiting for hope to come along and by the doorbell ringing, hope did come. I am in a battle with my mind hoping that I can learn patience until hope comes to me as well.
“God made man, and then said ‘I can do better than that.'” -Adele Rogers St. John
I agree with this quote since I am a woman. This quote to me means, when God made Adam, a man, he thought he could do better. Therefore, he created eve, a woman. I take this quote personally since being in the Army a lot of people said I could not make it through training since I was a woman. I knew I had to prove them wrong and I sure did. This world is sadly male dominant for the most part. I guarantee if you walk into a room with ten males and ten females, at least one male will tell you that the females are not capable of doing the same as the males. I will be honest here and say I have thought that same thing until the day I joined the military. After going through training I realized that all of my battle buddies who earned awards at graduation were female because they were capable of doing more than the males. In conclusion, even God had faith that women were better than men, therefore, we deserve a lot more credit than we get.
“Love isn’t finding a perfect person. It’s seeing an imperfect person perfectly.” -Sam Keen
I could not agree more with this quote here that it warmed my heart reading. I could not tell you how many times I have gotten my heart broken from being with a person who only is looking for perfection. I will admit that I am extremely far from perfect but I thank God for that since I can learn from my imperfections. As Hannah Montana says it best, ‘nobody’s perfect’. I truly believe every person has a soulmate somewhere in this crazy world and that soulmate will find all of their imperfections to be perfect. This quote is also very special to me since every time I would of come home crying because someone was mean to me, my dad would always be their to sit in my room and tell me this very same quote.
“Don’t go backwards; you have already been there.” -Ray Charles
I am very happy that I ran across this quote since it is very motivational for me currently. I am having trouble knowing what I would like to major in. I have tried business and biology so far but I think law in my path way. The only problem is, I still think about business because I believe it is where the money is. I also remember being bored and feeling like I am just following in my parents footsteps by choosing business. Therefore, after reading this quote I feeling like my issue is I keep looking back when there are so many more options ahead of me to explore. This quote also really helped me understand what my professor tries to tell us in class each week, this class really will change the way you think and feel about certain topics in life just by reflecting on them in these blogs.
